All of a sudden, that definitive home screen showed up, and it was game on. But nothing showed up on the screen! ThatвЂ™s when we remembered the contrast toggle on the side of the Game Boy, used to adjust the classic dot matrix screen. After popping in four AA batteries, we heard that classic Nintendo вЂњdingвЂќ that lets you know that all is right in the world, you have enough juice left to get in some game time. We pillaged the Gazelle Device Library and found an original Game Boy from back in 1989 with a Tetris cartridge still in it. That gameвЂ“as well as the original Super Mario LandвЂ“deserves a Technology Throwback Thursday of its own! Who doesnвЂ™t remember the frustration of getting a million squares when all you want is a bar? Or how about those L-shaped piecesвЂ“theyвЂ™re the wanna-be barвЂ™s, getting you part of the way to redemption, but not quite home. The Game Boy was released in 1989, and right away it came with Tetris, one of the all time classic games on any console. For this weekвЂ™s Technology Throwback Thursday, we take a look at the device that got me yelled at countless times for not paying attention or listening to annoying midi music way too loudly. However, because of the consoleвЂ™s size, it lost its backwards compatibility with the original Game BoyвЂ™s line of games.WhatвЂ™s gray, bigger than a sandwich, and supplied you with hundreds of hours of entertainment back in the 80s and 90s? The one, the only, Nintendo Game Boy. The Micro was smaller than anything that came before but with a better and even brighter screen. At only four and a half inches long, two inches tall and weighing less than a sneeze, Nintendo introduced the Game Boy Micro, the smallest official Game Boy ever made. It's still sought after by collectors to this day.Дў005 also brought along the last Game Boy to be made before the next generation of handhelds were released.

Later, in 2005, Nintendo gave the SP a higher quality backlit screen upgrade rather than the previous SP front-lit screen. There was no headphone jack though, so you either played in silence or blasted those tunes loud and proud. No longer were you stealing batteries from the TV remote or plugging into the walls on a bulky adapter (that was more of a weapon than a plug). However, one of the drawbacks of the system was that it was not backlit, so it was still hard to play in some conditions, but that would soon change.

It was also again compatible with the older systemвЂ™s games, keeping in line with NintendoвЂ™s support for backwards compatibility. Left and right shoulder buttons were added and a library of old SNES games were remastered and ported onto the Advance system. It was faster, sleeker and, and had a larger, higher resolution screen.

With the Game Boy Colour not only having a link cable connector, but also an infrared sensor too for more connectivity, it was the perfect system for that series of games.Дў001 introduced the world to the Game Boy Advance. It was around this time that PokГ©mon would really take off and its rise in popularity would also take the Game Boy along for the ride.

Finally, you could play all those Game Boy games in full 8-bit colour! It was also backwards compatible with all the older games, allowing the Game Boy Colour to have an extensive catalogue of games available on launch.
